South-West Day Forums
02 May 2010
Registration for UNYA's South-West Day Forums in Bunbury and Albany are now open!
Held on Thursday 20 May (Bunbury) and Friday 21 May (Albany), the Day Forums will provide a unique opportunity for students from the South-West region to learn about some of the most pressing international issues facing Australia and the United Nations as well as express their opinions on issues that matter to them.
- The day fora are for Years 10/11/12, with a maximum of 10 students from each school
- The day fora will run from 10am to approximately 3pm.
- The venues are to be confirmed, we will email teachers as soon as they are known (sometime next week)
- The day fora will have afternoon tea and lunch catered
- There will be a nominal cost of $5 per student to cover the food costs. We will invoice schools after the event.
Each day forum will consist of several different 'workshops', all based around the theme of "Breaking Down Barriers". We will include educational material about the United Nations and its place in the international system and on the issue of refugees and internally displaced persons, considering examples internationally and the situation in Australia.
We also want to explore what issues locally, nationally and internationally are important to the students themselves. We hope to incorporate the "Youth Change" initiative into the Day Forum, which aims to bring to government 'the voice of youth' through means of creative self-expression, such as postcards, artworks, song, drama etc. The purpose of this is to empower young people to send a message about what they believe is important and should be acted upon in a non-threatening environment that is inclusive and encouraging.
