The next exciting event available to WA Secondary School students is a Day Forum. The Day Forum is open to Year 10 students and will be held from 9.00 AM to 3.00 PM on Friday, 20 November 2009 at Hew Roberts Lecture Theatre, Nedlands Campus, University of Western Australia.
Given the current high profile of Refugees and Asylum Seekers in both national media and politics and the importance of understanding of this issue, the Day Forum will focus on this issue.
Delegates will be given the opportunity to hear from speakers on topics including what causes people to become refugees, the challenges they face and Australia’s approach to the issue. Small group workshops will then be conducted in which the delegates will have the opportunity to discuss the topic and share their opinions. The day forum is designed not only to educate students, but also to encourage them to speak their own mind and consider the opinions of others.
UNYA WA, as part of an UNYA National Policy drive, is developing a policy on the matter of Refugees, Asylum Seekers and Internally Displaced Persons. The policy will be developed by UNYA over the coming months through rigorous and wide ranging education and consultation with Western Australian youth. Delegates participating in this Day Forum will have the unique opportunity to contribute their opinions to this important document.
Included in the price of $15 per student is morning tea, lunch, and an invaluable opportunity to meet and exchange ideas with students from other schools.
